Hedges form small cabinets with sculptures and waterworks

An idyllic pergola, a small forest with winding paths, eyecatchers and flower beds... All this can be discovered in Schwetzingen Palace Garden, which is a masterpiece of European garden art.  We want to encourage you to take a summer stroll through this garden creation and its history with an invitation to head right down the middle to "parterres" and "cabinets"!

Wild wine and ivy climb part of the restored latticework

The filigreed latticework, the so-called "treillages", which promise a comfortable stay under the roof of leaves on hot days in Schwetzingen Palace Garden are currently being restored.  Almost 9 miles (14 kilometers) of oak laths were installed in the first building phase.  And by the end of 2012 the structure, which is based on elements from 1760, is to be completely refurbished.

This time our series on "Kabinette" (small exhibition rooms) in palaces of Baden-Württemberg takes readers to Rastatt-Förch.  The "Porcelain Palace" of the Margravine of Baden Sibylla Augusta offers amazing treasures. For example, in the Florentine Cabinet.  The precious stone tablets, which the sovereign had installed in the 1720's, are as beautiful as paintings.  They show exquisite taste!

Gadgetry: The Midday Cannon produced in 1815 for Ludwigsburg Palace
Ludwigsburg Palace, Gallery of Ancestral Portraits with ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone

Ludwigsburg Palace, where the Dukes and Kings of Württemberg resided, is a place for visitors to experience where there's always something new to discover.  On the occasion of the 325th anniversary of his birth, we present the Italian artist Carlo Carlone.  The almost 200 foot (60 meter) long fresco he painted in the Gallery of Ancestral Portraits (Ahnengalerie) of the palace is his masterpiece.  King Friedrich once had a chronometer with a "bang" produced.  We're talking about a so-called "midday cannon" (Mittagskanone), which we present in the "Vitrine" (Showcase) section.  As part of its traveling exhibition "Stille Örtchen (Johns), the State Palaces and Gardens deal with the topic of hygiene at court (until September at Schussenried Monastery).  In the Fashion Museum (Modemuseum), located in the Festin Building (Festinbau) of Ludwigsburg Palace, an interesting exhibit on this topic is on display: a flea trap.

Exactly how mobile were the lords and ladies in centuries past and were they able to dine in a manner befitting to their rank while traveling?  We pursue the answers to these questions in two articles. In addition to a wealth of additional interesting topics, the issue also contains tips on events with information on special guided tours. By the way, a detailed, continually updated calendar of events can also be called up at this homepage.

The issue is available here in German only.
