The Hochburg near Emmendingen

The "Hochburg" is one of the largest castle and fortress complexes in Baden.  Its importance in the 17th century as a fortress under Margrave Georg Friedrich of Baden can still be clearly recognized today from the impressive expanse of the complex and the preserved buildings with informative building details.

At the northern edge of the Breisgau mountains, between the town of Emmendingen and the municipality of Sexaum, the Hochburg proudly stands on the northern peak of a high ridge of Mount Hach, which extends into the Brettach valley.  From here visitors to the ruins have a picturesque view over the neighboring valleys up to the Black Forest.  In the castle museum, finds from the life of the former inhabitants vividly depict life at the castle at that time.
