Famous Persons

The Hochburg has also been home to some very famous people. For example, in 1775 the outstanding "Sturm und Drang" (Storm and Stress) poet Jacob Michael Reinhold Lenz and his friend Johann Wolfgang von Goethe were visiting in Emmendingen. On this occasion Lenz wrote his poetic treatise "Das Hochburger Schloss" (The Hochburg Castle), from which the following effusive words originate:

"Nowhere have I perceived the truth that all art is eternal, dear W.!, about which we agreed in lonely evening talks, as more alive than in the walls of Hochburg. I do not know though which unknown laws of the soul, when I jump around on these naked rocks, Shakespeare occurs to me so gladly, - when I see how that torn-down column presents its bushy head to the rain and storm like an island ………“
