Dietrich of Hachberg from the dynasty of the Counts of Nimburg probably built the first castle in the late 11th century.

1127

 

First mention in a document of the Bishop of Konstanz: "Allodium ad Hachberg".

1161

 

Conclusion of a contract at Hachberg Castle for the founding of Tennenbach Monastery. First mention of the castle as "Castro Hahberc".

1239

 

Heinrich II Margrave of Baden founds the line of the Margraves of Baden-Hachberg with its seat at the castle.

1352

 

Mortgaging of the castle to the town of Freiburg by Margrave Heinrich IV of Baden-Hachberg.

1356

 

Margrave Otto I marries the rich Freiburg patrician daughter Elisabeth Malterer. She brings along the redemption of the mortgage bond as a dowry.

1386

 

Death of Margrave Otto I; division of the castle and the dominion of Hachberg between his brothers Johann and Hesso. First documented mention of castle areas.

1415

 

Margrave Bernhard I of Baden purchases the castle and the dominion of Hachberg from the indebted Margrave Otto II.

1424

 

In the War of the League of Towns of the Upper Rhine (Oberrheinischer Städtebund) against Bernhard I, the castle prevails, while Emmendingen is destroyed.

1525

 

Failed attempt of insurgent peasants to assail the castle.

1533 -1577

 

Fundamental redesign according to findings of fortress theory by Margrave Karl II.

1571-1573

 

Construction of the steward's manor (Meierhof) at the base of the castle.

Around 1600

 

In the early 17th century, expansion to a fortress of the Duchy of Württemberg under Margrave Georg Friedrich with the construction of seven bastions.

1634 -1636

 

Surrounding of the castle by troops of the Catholic League. Capitulation of the castle garrison and subsequent pulling down of the fortress walls.

1660

 

Rebuilding of the residential and domestic buildings and repair of the fortress walls.

1678

 

During a thunderstorm four soldiers were killed when lightning struck in the castle.

1681

 

Voluntary destruction of the outer walls to ward off the French.

1684

 

A fire destroys the upper castle.

1688

 

Occupation of the castle by troops of Louis XIV of France and subsequent demolition of the fortress walls which still existed.

1698

 

Rebuilding is rejected due to the high costs involved. The destroyed buildings mostly decay.

1779

 

On 29 September Goethe visits the Hochburg.

ab 1870

 

First constructive securing and preservation measures.

Supporting of the castle complex by the Association for the Preservation of the Hochburg (Verein zur Erhaltung der Hochburg e. V.) with headquarters in Emmendingen.
