Castle ruins of Hohenbaden

Hohenbaden Castle, also called the Old Palace (Altes Schloss) of Hohenbaden, is one of Baden's most beautiful castle ruins, and as a result is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Black Forest.  For many decades the residential palace of the Margraves of Baden, the castle was built around 1110 and repeatedly expanded.  In its golden age the castle complex had over 100 rooms. In 1479 the Margraves moved their residence to the New Palace (Neues Schloss) in the town of Baden-Baden. The Old Palace then served as a widow's seat.  A fire in the late 16th century destroyed the complex. The ruins were not structurally secured until 1830.

The panorama view from the tower of the castle ruins provides a remarkable, breathtaking view.  It ranges from Baden-Baden to the Rhine Valley to the Vosges Mountains.  The Hall of Knights (Rittersaal) of the Old Palace is home to Europe's largest wind harp with a total height of 13.45 feet (4.10 meters) and 120 strings - a sight well worth seeing.
