Lorch Monastery

Lorch Monastery, general view

The Hohenstaufen monastery of Lorch lies on a rise in the Rems Valley.  Around 1100 Duke Friedrich I of Swabia donated the Benedictine monastery and designated it as the tomb of the Hohenstaufen family.  Several family members are buried in Lorch.  One of the most famous is Irene, the Byzantine Emperor's daughter and wife of a Hohenstaufen King.  In the impressive monastery church, the Hohenstaufen sarcophagus and the wall paintings of the Hohenstaufens tell of the famous family.

The picturesque monastery complex with its idyllic church, the monastery garden and the completely preserved ring wall are still well worth a visit today.  A particular highlight is the large round painting in the Chapter Hall, which is a colorful, lively illustration of the history of the Hohenstaufens.

Suggestions for a successful visit can be found under "Places of interest".
