Ochsenhausen Monastery

Ochsenhausen Monastery, founded at the end of the 11th century, lies on the Baroque Road in Upper Swabia and is one of the major monastery complexes in Southwestern Germany. The former imperial abbey had a long history of great religious and cultural importance until the monastery was disbanded in the course of Secularization.

The complex was used from the middle of the 19th century as an educational institution.  In 1988 the State Academy for Musical Youth in Baden-Württemberg (Landesakademie für die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Württemberg) set up its headquarters in the old monastery buildings.  The convent buildings, the prelate's building, the refectory and the historical observatory can therefore only be visited during guided tours.  A monastery museum in the Sovereign's Building (Fürstenbau) informs visitors on the 700 years of monastery history.
