Reichenau Monastery Island

Monastery building in Mittelzell

The monastery island of Reichenau in Lake Constance is famous for its historical buildings, which bear witness to the religious and cultural greatness of the former Benedictine monastery.  The three Romanesque churches on the island from the 9th to the 11th century illustrate the early medieval architecture of Central Europe.  The carefully restored wall paintings show Reichenau Island as an "artistic center of great importance for European art history of the 10th and 11th century".  The UNESCO added the monastery island to the World Heritage List in November 2000.

Visitors to the island can obtain information on the outstanding cultural and historical importance of Reichenau Island in three museum units in the Reichenau Museum in the immediate vicinity of the three Romanesque churches.  The impressions of the different museum stations of the tour of discovery around Reichenau Island are supplemented with a tour of the historical buildings to provide an understanding of the "Spirit of Reichenau Island".
The treasure vault of the Abbey Church (Münster) is a true jewel.  It holds art objects from the monastery's heyday.  These are kept in a very beautiful Gothic room from the mid-15th century.
