A simple water-surrounded castle is built by Luitolf von Schwaben to protect the stud farm

The owners of the castle, the margraves of Baden, raised the settlement of Stuttgart to a town

1250

 

Stuttgart and the castle fall to the Württemberg dynasty

1311

 

The counts of Württemberg move their seat from the destroyed ancestral castle on Württemberg Mountain to the Old Palace (Altes Schloss)

1533

 

Duke Christoph von Württemberg has the castle expanded to a palace

1560

 

All work on the Main Hall (Dürnitz) is completed

1562

 

The Palace Church (Schlosskirche) is consecrated

1572

 

Duke Ludwig has the Palace Church enlarged End of 16th cent. What is today Schiller Square (Schillerplatz) is built in front of the Old Palace

The bridges over the filled-in palace moat are torn down

1931

 

The Old Palace burns

1944

 

The Old Palace is partially destroyed by bombing raids

1948 -1970

 

The Old Palace is rebuilt for the Württemberg State Museum (Württembergisches Landesmuseum)
