In the northeastern corner of Baden-Württemberg lies the former monastery town of Ellwangen. The town complex with the former Benedictine church of St. Vitus and the adjacent former Jesuit Church with college, former Ellwangen Monastery, the Monastery Hospital (Klosterspital) today city hall, the Pilgrimage Church (Wallfahrtskirche) on Schönenberg mountain and the Residential Palace (Residenzschloss) of the prince provosts indicate the spiritual tradition of Ellwangen as the residential town of abbots and prince provosts.
In the beginning was the founding of the Benedictine monastery of 764 as one of the oldest and most respected monasteries in the German Southwest. In 1460 the monastery was then converted into a secular monastery headed by a prince provost.
The town has managed to preserve its over 1,200 year old appearance marked by the Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles until today.
