Monastery and Salem Palace

Monastery and Salem Palace, Aerial view

Salem Palace is among the most beautiful and important cultural monuments in the Lake Constance region.  Founded in 1134 as a Cistercian monastery, the expansive complex imparts a clear picture of the wealth of the former abbey, which unifies Gothic dignity with Baroque elegance like no other.  The impressive Gothic abbey church is a reminder of Salem's heyday in the Middle Ages.  In the Baroque age the abbots had the interior of the abbey adorned with magnificent stuccowork and paintings and led the monastery to its second heyday.

Today the complex is accessible to the public with an extensive cultural and visitors program.  As a result, visitors can enjoy days on specific topics, concerts, exhibits and much more in the splendid historical atmosphere.
In addition, the renowned school of Salem Palace, founded in 1920 by Prince Max of Baden and Kurt Hahn, is also located in Salem.
